bt371, a steadicam would not work underwater unless the housing in being used as a splash guard.

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/steadycam/ is a site with the cheapest stediacam plans I have seen price wise.

Are you sure a steadicam is what you are looking for and not a camera crane/jib?

Here is a better page with homemade steadicams and another with camera jibs/cranes .

Sorry for the double post, but this guy

can be had for 400 - 650 new for either the basic setup or tricked out, or purchased used for A LOT less. It's the Steadicam Jr and would work very well for the average wakeskater who films from a chase ski, on the tow ski, posted up on a tube, or just anywhere in general since we are usually shooting with a prosumer or lower end mini dv camera.

I have used that guy with the average panasonic/ sony mini dv and the regular size steadicam with broadcast cameras. Both are awkward at first but after a playing with them for a while and understanding how it works movement wise in relation to you its easy to get the shots you want.

**EDIT**

I'm rather borred at work and decided to find some e-bay prices for you guys.

Quick Search showed four kits going for under $100 and a few under $50. Like I said, you can pick these up used for next to nothing and even if they are missing a part or two, a little gaffers tape and some imagination will have it working in a jiffy. Also replacement parts are avaible but where's the fun in that? Laughing

Steadicam Jr. is great be sure to check out the Merlin, it's supasweet. So far I haven't seen any homemade ones perform like the pro ones.
