i know this is probably a newb question but does the wood on a rail have to be sealed or waterproof? Or can u use the wood at home depot or sumplace as soon as u get it?

You might want it sealed so it doesn't warp.

WAKE u dont really have to seal it or even buy pressure treated if u are going in a fresh water lake or pond, i have a 20ft rail all made out of spruce 2x4 and trex decking that has been in a pond for months and months now and shows NO sign of wear from the water. im a builder and deal with lumber everyday and i say just go and get u some spruce #2 lumber and go with it, its like a 3rd of the price.
