my spool is 6" in diameter and we have tryed a few different sprocket sizes but everything is a bit off. also i have noticed that people tend to use a 8" spool. can i get a sprocket to fit my set up or should i build a new spool?

be more specific... are you having a hard time gettin enough power to pull up a rider... or are you just goin too fast when up...

you should be able to use a 6 inch diameter... what gears have you tried?

well with an 8 hp engine your spool size should be fine... try going with a sprocket in between the ones you tried... if that dosnt work i would consider changing your spool... but i cant imagine that with that much hp that the spool is causing your problems

The reason people go with a 7" to 8" spool barrel diameter is so they can use a larger final drive sprocket. I don't know the exact mechanics behind this but the engine doesn't seem to work as hard to drive a 12T - 72T w/ 8" (i think about 22" circumpherence) combination as it does when trying to push a 12T - 36T w/ 4" barrel (apprx 11" circ.) They both should be close to reeling the rope in at the same speed, but from my experience, the smaller barrel just gives and recoils using a Clutch. When we went with the larger barrel setup, it was almost like the whole drive setup accomplishes more torque making for a better pull. Hopefully this explanation helps a little. Smash

thanks for all the help. we are putting together a 8" spool today. we decided to quit playing guessing games and just go with the proven set up.
