My last project "the swedish winch" had some errors and instead of reparing i´m building a new one. this is how the real swedish winch will look like. I give you; the SWEnch.

Gnarly Dancer 42, I want to keep it lightweight so i will go for a 5.5 hp suzuki with torqueconverter. It's the engine from my other winch and i will work allright if i get the gearing figured out... right now the ratio is 3:1 and i just ordered new sprockets, the new ratio sould be 3,5:1.... hopefully that will do the trick...

Gnarly Dancer 42, a torque converter is what you guys call a TAV. Check out winchskating.com if you want to know more...
eriknordin, 5,5 hp is plenty as long as you gear really carefully. Are you sure you have a torque converter and not a reduction gearbox with clutch? Are you sure 3,5:1 is gonna be ok??? I run 5:1 with 6,5hp...

sparrow.2, I'm not 100% sure about the gearing... i just might change it to 4:1 instead. What is a reduction gearbox?

eriknordin, the honda reduction gearboxes have an internal gear ratio of 2:1, so you can run smaller gears on your spool shaft. It does eat some power though, so I had to remove the restrictor and let my engine rev 6200rpm
Ignore my thoughts on the gearing, I had assumed you were running an 8" spool. Obviously your gear ratio is dependent on your spool diameter, but keep in mind that if it says something like 25km/h on paper you will be getting about 10-15% more speed in real life. Don't ask, everyone has found that up to now

sparrow.2, yep, thats right!i started to tare the engine apart and found that the gearbox had a ratio of aprox 2:1. Yes, the spool size has a lot to do with the gearing to. I have a pretty wide spool because it holds up to 500m of rope without interfering with my gear ratio...
The speed issue has an explanation... the spool diameter depends on how much rope is on there. While running the rope is making the spool diameter larger. and with that the gear ratio is changing. thats why you get 10-15% higher speed in the en of the run....

eriknordin, thats what I thought too, but my spool is also rather large and my rope rather thin (3mm). It only enlarges the spool by about 1cm with 300m of rope wound up, which doesn't explain the fact that instead of the 35km/h we tried to get we ended up going about 45-50km/h.
What is the diameter of your spool? You really have to be carefull with the gearing, or you won't be able to use the winch properly. Friends of mine ended up blowing up their clutch with too high gearing and were pretty pissed off as a result...
If your gearbox has a fixed ratio of 2:1 you are not going to be able to deepwater start with it. Have you got pictures of your gearbox? A torque converter actually changes the gearing on the go with adaptable pulleys and a belt...

sparrow.2, hmmm, thats strange....
I not to sure about the waterstarts, with the gearing setup i use now (3:1) it is possible to pull up a wakeboarder but not wakeskater... and the top speed is about 45 km
/h.... so if i change the gear ratio to about 3,5:1 that would make it a little bit stronger in the start without messing up the speed to much. I HOPE...
I'll post some pics later today...

bachlonso, you're building a winch?!? Give me a shout if you need any help (please!) I've had a couple of ideas since I built my last winch
eriknordin, I was wondering how you were going to bend the tubing for your first design... Your second design is definitely a lot easier to build and will be one heavy duty winch Did I mention it looks awesome?!
