I have a small lake (deepest about 4 feet)in my neighborhood that we would be using "illegally" I suppose.. I'm going to be building a winch and I was wondering if I picked up a 6-10 HP Electric engine if that would work instead of a normal 4stroke engine.

I figured I would use the electric so there wouldn't be too much noise so we wouldn't disturb the old hags so we could skate in peace.

any ideas/comments?

w3k1llsuck3rs, it could work.... but the spinning of the chain on the sprockets is a bit noisy, so is the clutch... if your trying to go full covert ops, you may want to look into belt drive.... i'm not sure if there is a TAV (c.v.t.) for secondary belt driven applications. but chain isn't so loud that the cops would get called... i hope Smile

but the electric motor should work. do you have a power inverter in your truck? or do you have LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG extension cords? Smash

either my clutch, or spark plugs, or clogged air-intake. You could proly cure a good size ham with the amount of salt up inside of her. Overall, operator error and laziness, good times. Neutral Neutral Neutral

all good though, got new stuff coming in, fun stuff. Birthday

w3k1llsuck3rs, be careful water and electricity is a bad combo. also i dont think a power inverter that youd plug into a cig lighter in your car would work. i install electric operators on garage doors and a power inverter isnt enough to run them.

coricluster, good idea..

liquidstunts, the longer the extension cord the more power you loose. the generator is gonna be the best bet.

Ahh I couldn't do some ridiculous attachment to a car battery or anything?

For power that is.

A 10hp electric motor is going to use a lot of juice...you'd need several car batteries to run it. I also don't imagine a 10hp electric motor being very cheap either...

generator is ur only chance. thery are silent, stand next to a honda civic one day when its idling, thats what it sounds like, almost dead silence, they are like 450 bucks for a good used one maybe cheaper. tats ur best best.

A 5hp electric motor (110V) will pull about 56 amps under a full load. Pulling a wakeskater would definately be a full load. At 56 amps you would have to have an extension cord the size of your leg. Even if you had a extension cord that could cary the amperage you could not find a 110 plug with a big enough breaker. You would have to go with a 220V motor. If you could get someone to let you plug into thier dyrer outlet then you might could pull off a 7 1/2 hp 220v motor. It would pull about 40 amp under full load. A electric dryer breaker is typically about 40 amps so you would be cutting it close. Good luck. That would be a good idea but hard to execute. But like some stated before, Water and Electricity are a bad combo. Make sure you seal everything real well. You should probably buy a class 1 enclosed motor. It will run you somewhere in the $500 ballpark. Good Luck.

Make sure you get a good rope. If you get a cheap one it WILL break.
