13hp may seem like an overkill to some but it does have its advantages. If your a big guy like 200+ lbs. you need the 13hp to get people up and running quickly. We have a friend thats 240 lbs. and a 6.5 hp winch wont cut it.

Also, if your doing a lot of gaps with short starts, the more power the better to get up and moving quickly. I personally don't think a winch should be built with anything less than a 9hp if you planning on doing big gaps, fountains etc.

The weight of the 6.5hp winch is nice but I would rather have a better pull and get a little workout carrying something.

the winch looks sick, but i could never justify droppin that kind of cash on something that i could build myself.... and as long as you got some kind of decent rope guide, i.e. fairlead rollers, then skating any angle is fine with little rope fatigue. really the only stuff you should buy from others is: rope & engine, but if you can't weld your own frame ask someone to make you one. i'll custom make frames for $250.

SleuCrew, 13 hp seems like a little too much. but i can understand the issue with heavy guys.

but for gaps with short run ups my 6.5 is fine. and as long as you are dock starting (run and jump on board) then you should be good!!
