ok well let me re-phrase.... if i was to build one.... would an 8 hp engine be stout enough to pull all 260 of me up? i dont really have time to build one or anybody in the know how.... so if anybody knows any info on how strong an 8hp would be it would be appreciated...

Basically anything with a torque converter will be able to pull you! Hell I reckon a 6.5hp with a torque converter could even deepwater start you.

You might want to check out winchskating.com There is a lot(!) of information to be found there.

sorry i didn't answer your Q first,
i've got a 6.5 hp Briggs & Stratton, with a TAV2 and it can EASILY deep water start me 175lbs, and it easily pulls people your weight.... but deep water starting depends ALL ON THE RIDER but for your weight, an 8hp would do just fine! like sparrow said www.winchskating.com has all your answers.

an 8 hp with TAV would be plenty of power for you.

Sutley, no it didnt, but i got mine from:

http://www.reddenmarine.com/site/new-detail.cfm?id=AMRAMSTL764

I got 1/8 inch and 600 feet.

My pulldozer has the 8hp on it btw and it pulls like a charm.

my cousin is about 230(maybe more im not sure) and a 6.5 with a torque converter can get him up but it just doesnt have the power to keep him on top of the water once he's up.

Skate252, 8 hp will be fine.... you can always change the gearing if you find that your not gettin enough torque or if your top speed is too high... definately go with the tav and the brake though... there is nothing worse than trying to hit a tight spot and hving the handle fly at you at 20 + mph

wakemitch What is the rest of your setup? Gearing and spool size?

If your winch has the power to deepwater start him it should definitely be able to keep him up.

It might also have to do with your cousins technique. A friend of mine rides really tail-heavy and our winch can't handle that too well. He had to learn to plane off better and earlier. Once he's planing all is well and the winch hardly has any real work to do. Try watching your cousin ride to see how he rides and help the dude. Very Happy

wakemitch, what's your gearing? i could start my 220lbs buddy, but he sat just a little low in the water during a run. back then i had a 6.5hp 12t-72t with a 6 1/2" spool... with my 8" spool it's perfect. and matt is a HEAVY RIDER (technique)
