I have riden and driven a whole mess of different engines and winches. I think that the Briggs and Stratton 8.0 horse gives the easiest pull but i have only used it in a very short pool where there was only a limited amount of space to gain speed. I am not sure how it would do in a pond or a longer pool. It definently gains a lot more speed over time. I think that it would take a very talented driver to hold that speed right in the middle. What do you guys think is the best engine? What do you think about the 8.0 horse?

Hansel

i say briggs is one of or if not the best engine for winching out there at this point in time. Its extremely reliable and a very steady pull.

But the 8 or the 6.5? I have the 6.5 and i pulled up Kyle Rattray pretty easily. He is at least 185. But no doubt the Briggs dominates. Thats like compairing a chevy to a honda.

i say the 6.5 is all you need especially if ur running a torque converter. If you wanna just use a centrifigul clutch then i would go with the 8hp that way you can get away with deep water starts but they still may be somewhat jerky

ive ridden the integrity winch with a 6.5 honda and a torq-a-verter and it was really smooth. it did deep water starts really easy. its my favorite winch ive ridden.
i usually ride a rewind with a 6.5 briggs and stratton with a centrifical clutch(i think?) its not as smooth but its extremely reliable ands pulls great. its a little harder to deep water start but as soon as you figure out the technique its a breeze.
I think the deference is caused by the torq-a-verter vs. centrifical clutch not the engine, but im not exactly sure. i think the torq-a-verter is the way to go though

Well about the Briggs 8hp..

I was riding behind/operating Oury's Pulldozer last weekend and it had a TAV and was really easy to maintain the right speed, and we were at a spot that was about 600ft, and used pretty much the whole spool. It was just as consistent as some of our shorter runs.

You can find them on http://www.harborfreight.com/ Just check for your local one.

i have a suburu 7 hp and a honda 6.5 hp and have ridden behind a briggs 8 hp... in my oppinion the suburu takes the cake... the 7 hp (all of the winches i ride behind use cvt's) had plenty of power and was real easy to control the speed and the rate in which the rider gets up to speed... i think 8 hp gets into the range of being too powerful especially with the cvt...

This Subaru sounds like thebomb.com. Me and Matt Manzari are talking about building a winch. That is why i am asking. I am going to have to look into this Subaru 9 hp. But for now i am thinking the 8 hp Briggs. Probably a dumb question but what is a cvt?
