Hey guys, we're gonna build our first rail this weekend. Decided to make it a nice and easy tabletop rail for our first try. I drew up the plans in google sketchup, which is pretty nifty.

Let me know what you think.

P.S. I know its gonna probably sit lower in the water.

Damn...looks nice. Lemme know how it works out because I plan on building something similar this summer. The specs would be nice too. Goodluck with it.

thats going to work fine, just make sure you fill the barrels with atleast 50% water before you slide it, cus it will let the frame sit lower in the water therefor giving you more balance.

make sure you bolt the sections together well....there will be alot of stress between them if its long....i build a floating dock/rail and used alot of screws and bolts...but the stress on the wood and placement of barrels ripped out all the screws? dont know was a mess

luck on that

These are the prices I'm specking out:

2x4x8 (12) = $72
2x4x12 (3) = $30
4x8 Plywood (3) = $100
55 gal drums (5) = free (from work)

Now I just gotta decide on a decking surface.

If anyone's interested, I can add some more detail (i.e. measurements) to the plans and post them here.

Yeah please post the plans and measurements...I'm probably gonna end up building something very similar to it.

Yea, I figured that, but they're also super free for me, so I'm gonna try them first! Smile

Here's the main box, you would build two of these (more steps to come)

This is based on the 3' high barrels that we have here.

I tried barrels with mine and didn't have much success.. way too tipsy. Save yourself a lot of time and aggravation and use 4x4's or 3x5 fence posts, they are cheaper then 4x4's.

Agreed with the above. Barrels are holding booze.

make your rail firm.

I was planning on making mine ina 2+2 formation..two barrels on either end...and possibly 2 more in the middle...basically converting my old rail into a fun box:

http://www.wakeskating.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11443

It was super stable even without any water in the barrels...although we put water in before we hit it.

I agree with everyone else though that barrels in your formation look kinda tipsy.

Yea, I agree that it probably won't be as stable as putting it into the ground, but it has to be floating. If its too sketchy to hit this way I may put some more barrels on the outside to stabilize it more. Thanks for everyone's input. I'll take some pics of the build process. I wasn't able to get the barrels today, so thats postponed til next week.

If you put barrels on the outside, make sure to cover them with something...don't built it like the one we did...we nearly killed ourselves the few times we hit it. It's only like that because we didn't have enough time to finish it before the end of summer.

Well, we got the frame built, but it started to rain. There was no lightning so we went out on the lake. Can't wait to get this thing built, it looks like a blast.

Brett Leadley, That's sick! Do you have measurements and/or pricing for that?
