I know a lot of you have home made winches, ive wanted to get around to making one but was just wondering what your total cost was, how much time it actually takes to build and how hard the parts are to come by
thanks

most of your parts can be found at northern tool ... it can cost anywhere from 500 bucks and up depending on how good of a shopper you are... it took us like a month to finish it but almost a year to get all the bugs out of it... definately worth it though

i got mine made for free as well... i ordered all my metal offline and payed for shipping and ordered more than i needed and still payed about 100 bucks... i didnt think it was too bad... but you can definately get it cheaper than that if you take the time to look around... i was too impatient to get a working winch done so i could hit all the sick spots around... heres a pic of our winch...

I've got everything besides a frame, spool and rope that I need. I'll need to have the frame welded and I'm guessing the materials will cost another 50-60.
I could have saved almost 300$ buying an eyelet instead on a fairlead and a centrifical Clutch instead of the Torq-a-verter so its possible to do it for under 500$ for sure.

Including the line I dropped about 450. My friend is a machinist so we built it in a day. Still needs a better throttle though. I got a CC with a 7 hp and it'll do deep water.

TheLeprechaun, thats a nice lookin winch, how much better if at all are the proffesionally made ones like grinch and blackbox compared to the average homemade one

dirtyohioriver22, well i have carried the grinch compared to TheLeprechaun's and my winch, and i must say the grinch is like a million pounds heavier with all the decrotive metal sheets on the sides, other than that they pull very similar, we have a 6.5 hp and the grinch has a 7hp, but as long as you are geared right and you have a tav then just about every winch either commercial or not should pull the same with ours and the grinch's setup

the only winches that have a signifigant difference in the feel of the pull are mine and the neveride because they use different transmissions and more hp

TheLeprechaun, Frye's took a dive due to not being staked down, was 'rebuilt' and has frozen on us again.

NotSoBueno, dude that sucks but it is kinda funny... we have had that almost happen a few times... yea we always tie ours to a truck or tree or something so that dosnt happen...
brianl289, anywhere from 60 to 72 tooth sprocket and 7-8 in spool has been tried and true
