I vaguely remember some ads featuring Byerly wearing a long-sleeved top, and it was also padded sorta like the O'neill Gooru vest (but long sleeve).

Does anyone remember where those ads were from, or what the particular top from O'neill was called?

Sounds like it. The one he wears in MayDay is a Boost top. It had a built in "Rib Cage" for extra padding and a little flotation.

Thanks for the response, it was a fun excuse for me to go back and watch that section in MayDay again! Good Times!

I could have sworn later than that (maybe 2000/2001) I also saw him in a print ad wearing a yellow padded long sleeve and the branding had it called a Gooru, but who knows?

Anyway, I am going to hunt eBay/Craigslist for one in L or XL for my brother. We were reminiscing about it (trying to remember really) and I thought it might be a cool surprise gift. What keywords should I be looking for? Does the branding and/or the size tags actually say "Boost" anywhere on it? Or does it just say "Rib Cage" on it, as in the photos you posted.

Again, thanks for helping out. The photos will really help.

I think it says boost on the left sleeve.

And i think the padded tops were done by 2001 and after. I remember wearing mine at a grubb demo in 2002 and felt a little goon-ish because the padding was kind of ridiculous. However, as a relic it's pretty cool. Blahh, that said, i think the gooru tops are different.
