Awesome! Full of great advice for interested and beginning filmers to soak in and apply to their technique and bag. Thanks Tad! Hopefully you just increased the amount of "good" wakeskating videos that will pop up on the various sites we have these days.

I will always remember a funny article like this that ran in TW Snow a few years back.

I would add: Don't feel the need to fill the WHOLE song up with your footage. Use the good footage you have and if it fills less time than the song you've chosen it's ok to fade the song down. It is best if you can chop the middle out of a song to make it fit your footage. The ending of a song paired with a banging ender can have a big impact on the audience and it will cement that rider/trick into their brains. You'd be surprised how easy it is to cut songs in half without the audience knowing you've tailored it for your edit.

Tad, as far as already been done songs, "Status Quo - Pictures of Matchstick Men" doesn't count because it was in a major snowboard movie right? Different sport makes it ok?? Confused

my .02 or whatever

I've lived in Florida for 27 years, how many times do you think I've strapped into a snowboard?

Do a real tutorial on settings, exposure, compression, fps, and stuff.

Settings

always adjust manually don't rely on the cameras automatic ones
ISO-the lower you keep it the better the quality, the higher it is the more noise(grain) you will get.
Shutter-anything lower then 1/30 you need a tripod or your images will be blurry. the body moves at 1/30th of a second and it is impossible to hand hold
Aperture- controls depth of field. shooting at 2.8 is not a good idea because it will be virtually impossible to keep a rider in focus.
White Balance- controls the temperature of your video. shooting in daylight set to 5200k

Exposure

always try and shoot during the golden hour. shooting at noon is NOT a good idea
it's better to shoot darker then to shoot to bright. you can always brighten an image but trying to darken an image from something blown out is nearly impossible.

Compression

you will almost always have to do this to post a video on the internet. watching youtube videos will help depending on what editing software you are using. just remember everyone has a different way of doing it so some work better then others.

FPS(frames per second)

most people shoot 60fps is produces the best quality
shooting 30fps make it very hard to slow a clip down
as Tad said too much slow mo ruins a video

Camera Sensors FF(full frame) vs APS-C(crop sensor)

full frame cameras are the top of the line $3,000 and up usually
crop sensor are what the majority of people use
when shooting on a crop sensor your focal lengths change.
shooting a 50mm on a crop sensor is more like shooting an 80mm. so that means shooting a 70-200 or LL actually see's farther then 200

Accessories

If shooting video using an eye piece is key for getting your image in focus. trying to look at that little screen in direct sunlight is near impossible.
Invest in a nice case/bag. if your going to spend $1000 for your gear don't just throw it in an old school backpack. lens are made of glass and will break.

Other

Don't be cocky about your work. Not everyone is going to like your video/pictures but that doesn't mean you hate the person. Take the good with the bad. If you want to be told how good it looks show it to your mom. If you want an honest response send it to websites, magazines, etc.

I've never heard this theory/idea before. Can you elaborate a bit?

I doubt there's anything that I could teach you at this point, Tad.

One thing that I would like to add for those building up their kit is that I would absolutely avoid buying a camera bag that looks like a camera bag. Because if it looks like a camera bag a thief is going to grab it pretty much every time. Anecdotal evidence (because it's right every time!)- my mom's bag is a Tamrac bag that looks like a camera bag, and someone saw it in the back seat of the suburban and busted the window out and stole it. $4K worth of gear gone, not counting the broken window repair. I've used a Dakine Sequence bag for quite a few years now, and since it looks like a backpack (much less exciting) I think it's FAR less likely to walk off if I leave it sitting out somewhere.

Also, if you need a hard case get a Pelican.
