So I don't understand where you guys build these rails. Are you guys going out to a river or lake and building them? Is that even legal since the river/lake is owned by the state or county or whatever? Or are you guys just building them on private winch ponds?

Laws vary locally. My experience has been just to put them up and see what happens. Sometimes they stay in a while, sometimes they get torn out within a week. If you can find a hidden corner somewhere where boats aren't common (maybe only accessible by ski) you've got a much better chance of that thing staying in.

My river is patrolled and I build 2 rails 3 years ago (one is a big A frame) and they havent said a word to us about them. Obviously we stay away from them when the cops are out..

we found a less populated area to put ours. you can't get to it in a big boat, only a jon or jetski.

most of them get torn out pretty quickly by angry lake-goers than think they own everything. but then again, its probably no legal in the first place.

We've had the sheriff and Highway Patrol out to our spots due to angry landowners, pissed off kayak rental owners trying to shut us down, and they have never made us take down our rails. Once in a while they ask us to leave just to make their lives easier, but they stopped doing that, too. We ride on a river where there is no boat traffic other than canoes and small fishing boats. Generally speaking, we are more courteous and respectful than the people doing the complaining, which seems to go a long way. We also don't build crazy strapper monstrosities, cuz I'm lucky enough to know a whole slew of wakeskaters to ride with. just your basic flatbars and inclines.

what if i build one out by my dock behind my house? could I get fined for not pulling a permit? Because that happens if you try and build your own dock..

Try it and see. Most likely "they" won't even know what it is and at worst just make you tear it down. Never know unless you try. I'm amazed at how much can be gotten away with if one just goes for it like it's all good.
