You need a motor with the shaft sticking out the side of the motor. lawn mower engines the shaft comes out of the bottom of the motor. I think they call them horizontal or vertical shafts. You want horizontal.

No!!! The engine is designed to run in that position. If you tilt it on it's side all the oil will be in the lowest point in the engine and won't get pumped to where it's needed.

ok ok, so i know many people have tried to brainstorm over this, but its kindof my only option so hear me out, what if you made the spool horizontal, and then suspended the motor over it, just like a lawn mower, i think it could work if it was a box style frame. i might just try it.

I think you should try it. why not, right? but hears what I think would be your problem.. When walking the rope out sometimes the spool will spin faster than you can walk so the rope releases too much and if the spool is sideways, it will fall under the spool and get caught up in the axle and sprocket.. Did that make sense?

Also, the spool would need to be lower than the motor, making it top heavy and the rope really low to the ground.

People have been talking using a vertical shaft motor for years since they're usually cheaper/more available if you feel like tearing apart a lawnmower. The only major issue is dealing with the rope since gravity will not be your friend. If that's all you have available it's worth a shot I think. You'll be in new territory though and won't be able to get much advice from others. I think someone had built one a while back but not sure how it turned out/lasted.

Or just come up with a gearing system that provides power to a horizontal shaft.

Shaft comes out of motor vertically, you engineer a way to have it turn 90* horizontally where it connects to your spool.

This one is more industrial and expensive than we would need but the idea is there. Basically you just need a gearbox/transmission/setup to change the orientation of the PTO shaft.

I think that is a great idea to put 90 degree gear box on to a vertical shaft... but on the other had its just one more thing that could go wrong on your winch. but is a cool idea fsure
