I was wondering if you guys could help me. I'm thinking of getting an 11hp motor but all of the torq converters I've found say 5-8hp. Is this a problem, does the 11hp need one or where have you guys found one that will fit on this engine.
Thanks

My TAV didn't fit on the 11hp motor I got I had originally bought the TAV for a 6.5 though, went ahead and am going with that for now. If I do end up using my 11hp for a bigger winch I'll probably just use a centrifugal<probably spelled wrong) clutch on it.

I believe the original just tav is made for bigger motors and the newer tav2's are made for lower h.p motors. But I could be wrong.

shaft size, bigger motors normally have a 1" shaft... the 6.5's and below normally have 3/4" shafts(though there are 6.5's with 1")

comet is out of business. but there is a company to fill their shoes building torque converters although i forget the name... i do beleive thy make a t.converter for the 1" shafts

I had a 13 hp motor and i had to use a centrifugal clutch and gear it right to get the maximum top end out of it because usually the problem is to much low end torque and not enough top end. Its possible to make it work, but honestly depending on your budget your better off getting a motor who's bolt pattern is compatible with the torque converters. don't worry about the horse power range it calls for as long as you don't go crazy. Using a torque converter in your system is pretty much a guarantee that she will pull fast enough with a do able gear ratio. Just remember that the diameter of your spool also comes into play when calculating you gear ratio. I calculated mine using 3 variables in a differential equation to find at what rate i wanted the diameter of the spool to increase. your speed will decrease with a larger diameter but usually it is negligible. Hope this helps, I'm really into this stuff and i just make random winches for fun so if you have any questions i would be more than happy to help!
