are freaking cool. supposedly in the future you will be able to "order" something and simply print it out at your house.

that's exactly what is supposed to happen. it's the same principal as downloading software rather than having to wait for the CD. i'm not fully sure how they plan to print the motors and electronics, but there's no reason not be think it's possible. google what they can already do.

I'm confused. I could see it being used for prototyping or something. Maybe "printing" out a new design for an iPod you make in cad or something just to see what the physical design you created would look like. But as far as printing out a hardrive and a metal/glass case and LCD screen and all that mess, I don't foresee that happening.

lol so it can make a model....pretty much a high tech CNC no?

isn't that how most surfboards are shaped by entering dimensions into a program then the CNC cuts it out of a blank piece of foam

printers are additive tools, so basically it can grow you a model of what your designing in 3d with a CAD program
the jewelry industry is using them to print wax rings they design with CAD programs

but a cnc dose the same thing in a subtractive method from a block of wax, but its way more accurate and the quality of the surface is X100 cleaner than the printed one

but printing dose give you the ability to make things like a hollow ball

where as a cnc could only make a ball , or two bowls that you could them fuse together to make a hollow ball

its all about breaking down the shapes

and quality of surface

as for the idea that this printer could print something like an IPOD or a new shoe

its way too primitive right now

it would have to have the ability to store the necessary elements , and compounds, and minerals , etc that would make these objects up and be able to fuse them together

i don't ever think we'll have the technology to Print a fabric or anything with an irregular structure
