In my opinion, the whole new/byerly thing is a total conflict of interest. If you're going to be a wood shop, be a wood shop. If you're going to make your own line of wakeskates, then just do that.
skate shops can use reputable wood shops to make their shop boards.
Just to play the devil's advocate, you can say that the companies are charging out the ass for a board, but you also have to think about what's going into that board: art direction, potentially a professional rider, and really any other expense that goes into running a business.
I'm not saying the skate industry is exactly like the wake industry. But in the end, a shop deck is still competing with an actual board company. I think about this and I would say that the dynamics are beginning to change in a number of ways, but for the most part the shop is supposed to be the main channel between the consumer and the company, and not its competitor.
