The following was an post event article for last years Mid West Wake Fest. It was written almost 10 months ago, but for one reason or another never made any publications. Instead of scraping the work that the author put into it, I thought I would post it here for all to read. Also keep in mind that pictures for the past MWWF's and details for this years event can be found on www.midwestwakefest.com

>>MWWF ‘03
(Midwest Wake Fest)
By: Annie Haroldson

For those of you that might have missed last years Mid West Wake Fest, or for those of you that may want to relive the memories of their MWWF experience, this article is for you. And remember MWWF ’04 is scheduled for July 16th – 18th in Ottawa, Illinois again.

Midwest Wake Fest had another stellar year in 2003 at the Four Star Marina in Ottawa, Illinois on the scenic Illinois River. Again, Midwest Wake Fest proved that only being able to ride a limited time throughout the year due to Mother Nature doesn’t have to be a set back. If you were looking for talent of all ages and skill levels, then Midwest Wake Fest was the place to be July 18th through the 20th.

The weekend began for some on Thursday, to get there early and find a primo campsite next to the water. And what else? Ride, Ride, Ride!! Mother Nature had another idea for campers that night with wind, hail, heavy rain, and lightning. Those who were in tents toughed it out while others were tucked away in their mobile homes, but the storm didn't put a damper on anyone's weekend.

Friday came, and clean up of tents and banners was the first on the agenda after the evening of storms. More of a crowd showed to get a few pulls and try demo equipment from Cassette, Double Up, Trick Boardz, Wake Tech, Inland Surfer, Kampus Wakeskates, Centurion, Nautiques, and Calabria. Some people hung out on shore and socialized, while others waited patiently by the sign that read, "Stand here for a ride", to catch a pull because they didn't bring their own boat. Friday evening some campers had fires and partied at their tents while others went to the bar at Four Star to loosen up and socialize after a long day of riding.

On Saturday, the height of attendance was estimated at four hundred people and fifty to sixty boats. The day began with a wakeskate clinic where Cassette’s own Thomas Horrell and Danny Hampson gave their professional expertise to Midwest wakeskate rippers. Shortly after, the first team in the team wakeboard competition left from the dock in their own boat with a film crew aboard to tape all team members during their runs. When all teams had been filmed, the tapes were collected, and the crowd would be given the chance to judge the teams during the evening festivities on the patio at Four Star. Three o’clock rolled around and the wakeskate competition went off with an array of dock starts, kick flips, shove-its, and yes, even some attempting crazy inverts. Thomas and Danny manned the microphone and clipboard to both judge and announce the wakeskate competition. Shortly after the winners of the wakeskate competition were announced, Thomas and Danny took to the water to show all Mid West Wake Fest attendees just why they are professionals. Following the wakeskate demo was a double up competition, where riders were given two attempts to show off their biggest tricks. Throughout the three competitions over $20,000 of product from various sponsors was raffled off, and just about everyone walked away with some killer swag.

Saturday evening, the festivities moved to the patio of Four Star where a local band pumped out the tunes all night. The crowd was given the chance to judge the team competition videos and the team pulling in the most applause winning (even if it was for the outfits they wore while throwing their biggest tricks). A special treat was then awarded to everyone when Sfumato, the Cassette wakeskate team’s new video, was premiered. Because of overwhelming response from our sponsors another raffle was held during the evening festivities. The band continued to play until closing time for those who wanted to stay and hang out, party, and socialize after a full day of riding.

Sunday morning rolled around a little to quickly for some of us, could Mid West Wake Fest 2003 really be almost over? Thomas and Danny didn’t think so, they took out yet another group of wakeskaters who wanted some guidance on perfecting their tricks. The ladies also felt they had to have one last blast with Mid West Wake Fest’s first "Ladies Only Boat". Ladies from all over the Midwest got a chance to get out in a boat together with no men and represent the feminine side of Wake Fest. When the ladies arrived back at the dock, they were awarded with an arm load of swag to take home with them from Wake Chicks, Push Clothing, and Chicks Who Rip.

The organizers of Midwest Wake Fest would like to thank each and everyone of the over 60 sponsors that made this event a huge success. Please check out the Mid West Wake Fest website for a complete listing and links to all of the sponsors websites. Also, while you are on the website don’t forget to check out the pictures and videos from the weekend. So if you live in the Midwest, and you are looking for something to do the third weekend in July, or just need to plan a road trip, check out www.midwestwakfest.com for details on Midwest Wake Fest 2004.<<

MWWF ‘04 is less then 10 days away!!!!!
Ottawa, IL - July 16th-18th on the Illinois River
Schedule for Mid West Wake Fest 2004:
· Friday – July 16: Demo Day – How does being able to try products from such companies as: Inland Surfer, Liberation, Joyride, O’Brien, Shoreline Lakeboards, Trick Boardz, Vew-Do, and Wright Boards sound to you? Make sure to pay the WWA insurance for the weekend and we will get you out riding. There will also be boats from: Centurion, Nautiques, Supra, and Master Craft on hand for all attendees to trial.
· Saturday – July 17: Social Day – The whole point behind MWWF is getting to meet other wakeboarders. The “Twilight Double Up” contest is back and once again being pulled by Nautiques. This year contestants are not only battling it out for the cash, but also for some awesome trophies being supplied by Krown Wakeboards. Also making its return is the popular “Team Contest”. So grab your buddies and a video camera (or camera guy) and video your runs for the crowd to judge later Saturday night. The top team takes home the winnings. Wakeboard clinics and times are in the works.
· Sunday – July 18: – Get up, shake off Saturday night, and ride till your arms fall off. The MWWF “Ladies Only Boat” will be shoving off at 9:00am. Special guest and Pro Tour rider Laura Lohrmann will be on hand to hang out as well as give some coaching tips for those ladies who want it. Goodie bags and prizes for all the ladies provided by Wakechicks.com, Vans, Curly Grrlz, and more. Please contact Annie at HardCOREcheetah@aol.com to reserve your spot or just to gather more details about it.
No boat?
Don’t let that be your reason not to join in the fun of Wake Fest. We will have a dock in the water to help promote socializing. If you are riding solo or just looking to expand your group of riding buddies just head out to the dock. MWWF history has shown that there are plenty of generous people riding in the Midwest that are willing to share their good fortune of having great rides and open spots in their boats. And as always, please remember to be courteous and take care of those who take care of you. “Respect Gets Respect”
The “Great” MWWF giveaway
If you were at the last two events you know what we mean when we say “Great”. MWWF 2004 has over SIXTY (yes 6 0) sponsors that have pitched in their product just for you. With raffle ticket prices and a truckload of prizes like these, you are sure to get a better deal then you ever could on E-Bay.
Entertainment
Make sure to loosen up your vocal chords for Friday night. Yes, that’s right; karaoke will be making its appearance at MWWF. Four Star will be hosting a karaoke party with sounds provided by DJ “Get ‘er Done”. Then on Saturday the band “Fixate” will be pumping out the tunes starting at 9:30pm. We will also be doing the first public showing of the Midwest wakeboarding video “Mullet Mayhem” filmed by Boreded Up Productions.
Lodging Information
Don’t waste valuable riding time driving around lost, check out the Maps / Directions page on the website for details on how to get to Four Star Marina. Also check out the Accommodations page for suggestions on who to call for hotel reservations if you’re not feeling the call of nature. Otherwise there is plenty of camping available at the MWWF site. To get a campsite and boat ramp pass ($30), just poke your head in the bar when you pull up to Four Star. Jeanette or Speedy will be more then happy to hook you up.
Showing up early ? ? ? ? ?
Wake Fest does not officially get underway till Friday, but the Illinois River can supply some of the best riding during the weekdays. Four Star always has camping available and with the variety of local hotels vacancy should be no problem, although we strongly suggest making reservations in advance. So if three huge fun-filled days of riding aren’t enough for you, pack it up early and head out to Ottawa before the crowd gathers. You won’t have much company, and you won’t be sorry.
Check-In
Whether you are camping or lodging in one of the local hotels we ask that you check in with us sometime Friday or Saturday morning, under the island tent, to make sure that we have you registered for the product giveaway. There will also be registration forms for all the contests under the tent, as well as some other goodies for all MWWF attendees. Any amendments to the schedule will also be post in that area as well.
Miscellaneous ? ? ? ?
