So the wife & I did the big boat haul from DFW to get a little butta on Lake Austin (most all of the DFW lakes are toast from the drought); my buddy has a place right on the water. First day out, Sunday, my friend came down wrong from a w2w jump, and snapped his left femur into 3 pieces. I knew it was bad when I could hear him screaming as soon as I let off the gas. It was pretty tough getting him out of the water. We ended up using his prodigal 41 as a stabilizing platform for his leg; the paramedics said that probably kept the trauma on his leg from being much worse.
It was quite a scene; got to have Austin Police & Fire take over my boat for a while, and had the helicopter buzzing around over head. Finally took about 5 paramedics to lift him off of the swim platform & onto the rescue pontoon. The worst part was enduring all the incoming rollers from all of the lake traffic while waiting for help; every roller would move his leg around, causing him agonizing pain.
He's recovering at home now with a titanium rod in his leg. There's a little thread about it here:
http://www.360wakeboard.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=5513
So be careful out there, and be prepared. Good idea to have a cell phone on hand to call 911 (like we had to), and be sure to have all your paperwork on hand: driver's license, certificate of boat owership, etc. The police will be asking for this stuff.

Wow that's some story I wish your buddy all the best.. hope everything goes well with his recovery. My bro just fractured his L2 vertabrae wakeskating.. reminds you how dangerous this sport can be sometimes
bringing cell phone on boat or pwc= smart move

Man, I've thought of something like that happening and it scares the crap out of me. Especially with the broken femur thing, and if that bone moves around too much it could end up severing veins/arteries. The worst part is we have a crappy boat that doesn't have a swim platform...so it would be ridiculously hard to get in that boat if something really bad happened.
Anyway, I wish your friend the best with his recovery.

TTUFAN24......yeah, that's him. He's actually the guy who got me to try skating for the very first time a few years back, when I was still a strapper . I don't think he posts much on this site; although he says he does read the forum.
Never got a really clear account of the mechanics of the fall; he was in too much pain when it happened, and too wasted on pain meds when he came home from the hospital. I think he may have been trying to bail when he landed & realized he wasn't gonna make it, and his shoe didn't slide off of the grip tape. Apparently there was also some twisting involved, because the loose peice of bone in the middle was rotated along the axis of the femur. I watched the crash in the rear view mirror (I was driving), and it really didn't look any different than the 100+ other times I've seen him fall trying to go w2w.
Right now it looks like he's on the road to recovery, but he's gonna be benched for a while. I'm sure he'll be riding again next spring. I told him he needs to get copies of the x-rays so he can post 'em.

i dedicate my next serious injury to his honor. and it's coming because i've been skateboarding again. i might be too old to try and kick flip this gap at the middle school by my house but it's on. i really wish i had health insurance, they offer it through my school but i havent got around to it. maybe this will be my wake up call and motivation.

I broke my femur 2 summers ago, I recovered so fast though...4 months tops. I broke it in August and I took a few runs before seasons end. Tell your bud to do his therapy and to not lay around. zGet back out there. I popped my knee a few weeks ago and haven't ridden in as many, I get my results back tommorrow so.............I'm ready to say give me a brace and I'm getting back on the water.

One of the guys that rides for us a couple of years ago was going w2w and his back foot didnt land completely on the board and he blew his leg out of the socket. His shoe was hitting him in the face when i came around to pick him up. It was crazy sick. I had to david Hasselhof into the water and drag his big ass out. Very scary day. But the funniest part was we took him up to a dock party and while they were stretchering him we got free drinks. ha. He was riding within a month or so.
Lesson here is be prepared and always make sure everyone knows what to do when something bad happens. you never know when its gonna be your posse that take some trauma.
when i was testing the movement protoypes last year i had a really thick heavy one and took it in the side of the head and split me open with 8 stiches. We finished out the day with a bandana on my head.

Man that's a bad injury, I was out with a guy who broke his femur about 15 years ago. Can't imagine being in pain like that.
On lake A on a Sunday that's just crazy, guess that's better than being in the middle of nowhere but I know what you mean about the constant rollers.

mikeskatesonwater, falling off the couch while "riding" standing on your board in the living room doesnt count as a legitimate wakeskate injury.
You should know that.
At least your getting a sweet new vest.

im so sorry bout your buddy bro, hope he recovers fast. my buddy adam just broke his femur the other week on w2w jump also. that called for 6 paramedics, a rod in his leg, and some gnarly pain killers.
crazy how shizzle happens so fast. i was out riding 2 days ago and broke my leg in 2 spots, total bummer. they may or may not have to put a metal plate in my ankle, that would blow.
tell your buddy to keep his head up. hope hes doing alright.
and to everyone, dont break your legs.
