As many of you may know by now, Mid West Wake Fest 2006 has been put on hold. Please don’t worry MWWF will be back in full swing for the 2007 season. (Murray took a year off so why can’t we?) The MWWF organizers have been called upon to help put on a few other events. The guys over at Wakeside Marine (www.wakesidemarine.com) in Indiana (not affiliated with www.wakeside.com) have asked us to help them put on a great pool-rail event called LandSlide, which is scheduled to take the Midwest by storm in August. We are also working on planning to have lakeside camping at LandSlide as well as a Double Up contest. That is all I can say at this point in time, please keep your eyes open for more information. Also coming up in August is a Golf Day for Ski Down Cancer put on by Rockford Ski Rack (www.rockfordskirack.net) in Illinois. (For more information e-mail mwwf4u@hotmail.com) And for you Midwest snowboarders, Rockford Ski Rack is planning a pre-season movie night in October and a rail jam later in the winter. As you can see we have our hands full and did not want to put on MWWF this year if we could not put 110% of our blood, sweat, and tears into it for all of you.

In the absence of MWWF this year, I would like to let you all read the article that Annie Haroldson did as a follow up to last years event. So feel free to re-live the memories from MWWF ’05, or see what buzz about our event is all about and make your plans to attend next year.

The beautiful Illinois River was the setting once again for the fourth year of Midwest Wake Fest 2005. Four Star Marina opened their “peninsula” in Ottawa, Illinois for 350 wakeboard addicts from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The official dates were scheduled for Friday, July 15th through Sunday, July 17th, but some avid wakeboarders were jonesing from last year’s event, and started arriving as early as Wednesday evening.

Thursday began with the calmest water to be found in the Midwest; not a jet skier or tuber in sight, truly a wakeboarders dream. The Midwesterners that were lucky enough to break away from their everyday lives and show up at Four Star early had one thing in mind, drop the boat in the water, lets ride! The majority of the campers arrived around the dinner hours, just in time to get a set in before dusk. Thursday night’s activities included relaxing, setting up tents, cleaning boats, and having a few drinks. Midwest Wake Fest attendees traveled from one campsite to another meeting new people or visiting old friends. At 2:00am, a boat left the harbor for some night riding.

Friday morning everyone awakened early because the heat in the tents was overwhelming. The heat pushed many wakeboarders out in to the river to ride or just jump in to cool off. More Midwesterners showed up and the peninsula looked like a scattered mess of tents, RV’s and boats. Throughout the day there were demos on hand from Nautique, Centurion, Master Craft, Wakezup, and Calabria. A Rave rail compliments of wakecoupons.com was placed in the water for anyone brave enough to challenge it and Rip Curl was in full representation for campers to check out the gear and maybe purchase something they may have forgotten at home or just couldn’t live without. By late in the day, most wakeboarders were out on boats for the last set before dusk, or headed in to wipe down their boat from an active day if riding. Once all of the boats were cleaned of the river scum, Midwesterners moved their energy to the bar where they were able to play some pool, have a few drinks, socialize, others just stayed at their own campsites and enjoyed the clear night and relax before the explosion of Saturday ‘s events came around.

Saturday came and went with a BANG! A clinic with eager riders left at 10:00am with Greg Necrason, riders were able to get some pointers and suggestions to improve their riding skills. At 1:00pm, the day raffle began and a ton of schwag was given away through a balloon pop game. At 3:00pm, MWWF’s Team Tube Contest began. Yep, you read that right, a tube contest at a wakeboard event! A team consisted of two people, and they started on one tube. Two tubes were being pulled at the same time; you had to stay on a tube the longest for your team to move on to the next round. Mark Michellini and Brian Huels were our first place contestants, by jumping tubes and throwing a head lock on one of their unsuspecting opponents and ripping him off the tube. Shortly after the tube contest, the annual MWWF’s Twilight Double Up Contest began. Competition was fierce as the contestants came out with raleys, hoochie glides, an assortment of spins, tantrums, and even a whirlybird. In the end there were three people who the judges, Lauren Loe and Greg Necrason, felt stood up their trick and rode away with out hesitation. Saturday night’s festivities headed back to the deck of the bar at Four Star, and began with a raffle, which included boards, board racks, ballast bags, fin packages, wake surfboards, and other various items. Concluding the raffle and the award ceremony, the party moved into the bar where pool players went straight to the tables to play and socialize while others got their groove on as the DJ spun the tunes. Campers partied at the bar until closing time and then headed back to the “peninsula” to continue the festivities until the early hours of Sunday.

The heat on Sunday was the hottest of the weekend, so most campers were out of their tents bright and early, even after the late night activities spilled into the morning hours. MWWF’s “Ladies Only Boat” shoved off shortly after 9:00am with Lauren Loe and 12 other women aboard. The majority of the riders packed up, said their goodbyes, and headed for home, but some addicts stuck out the heat and did some more riding before getting on the road themselves.

The Midwest Wake Fest coordinators would like to thank all of our sponsors, and the many people who donated their time to the event. If your looking for something to get you off the couch the third weekend in July, make sure you pencil Midwest Wake Fest [2007] into your calendar. Don’t forget to keep your eyes on www.midwestwakefest.com for all of the details.
