Sim Bradley takes us through the process of customizing the graphics on your wakeskate to better fit your personality. This is a cool project to do during those winter months while you can't ride.

Anyway lets get this topic back on target didn't mean to hi jack it. That looks pretty cool i need to do that. I was thinkin a dark color on bottom with the little skull thing on the byerly shoe and a big cassette written across the bottom in hot pink or orange, and whatever color i do the stencils in (hot pink or hot orange) on the top around the grip tape

Skulls are so punk, so cool and so... retarded.
Same for the already oldfashioned "fluo revival" style. Smash

wakeriderof87,
I'm digging it. I liked the green of the 4-trac last season (obviously) and the pink that Sim used was sweet (it reminded me of my shoe laces when I was about 9 years old). I'd like to see an orange too. If you do it, be sure to take some pictures.

Do you think Sim's instructions will help you out? I thought they were really good.

"First of all, you must roughen the surfaces on your skate with the sandpaper", is it just me or would that mess up your skate pretty bad, even if it was just for a minute. I dont think I would have the guts to take sandpaper to my new skate.

You just want to rough it up a little bit. It won't hurt anything. Just don't sand it and then blow off the rest of the project and go ride the board without replacing the sealant. Your skate won't last very long if that happens.

Try it on an old one first to see how it works out. If you don't have an old one, then wait until your currently new skate is "old" or not brand new.

I personally suck at projects like this, so I am a little nervous about it as well. My graphic would probably have paint dripping down from it or something dumb like that. If mine would come out half as clean as Sim's, I would be happy.

with all due respect, by painting a big ass cassette logo on the bottom, you've kind of defeated the object of PERSONALISING your board, but if you think it's cool, then by all means, do what you want, but have fun.
Travis, You really should sand the board first though. use a really rough paper, and just take the 'gloss' off of the surface. Have you ever tried to use a felt pen on selotape before? It's the same thing, the paint will seperate into blobs if the surface is smooth.
any one can mail me if they really care or need any 'guidance'. peace

I love this concept, after I'm out of school in April it will keep me occupied til the season starts in late May. The possibilities are endless, as seen in your design, thats one quality stencil. One question, can the same thing be done on a non-wood skate? I have a Grubb 112 from 2003, and although it has a very pretty design on the bottom, I like the idea of my own personalized weapon. Any tips would be appreciated.

Patrick Quinn, Same things apply to any skate, compression moulded or wooden. With the hyperlite skate, you will still have to sand down the surfaces and prime them with white first. It will only be harder to not get paint on the foam grip, as it has a more raised profile, and therefore, paint will seep under any covering that you can make. Aside from that, it's the same, you don't need to lacquor the board, but it will stop your paint scratching off straight away. make sure you all mail me the results!

sim, who did paint a big ass Cassette logo on the bottom?
I made a board with an old Mutiny logo.

It was back in 2002 and at that time I didn't know what Mutiny exactly was and... I didn't care!
I just thought that their logo was nice.
For a new board I would choose something more personal, for sure.

Man, I like this concept and your instructional is clear and comprehensive.

As alex and electricsnow said in another thread, posts are often misunderstood. The Internet has its limits. Sad

yea but i like what cassette is doing with their wakeskates and I'm still making mine different, its not like i'm repainting it just like it was. It would be like sayin that if you didn't take the maufacturers emblem off your car that you put some rimes and exhaust and other stuff on that it isn't really personalized
