ok ipods use a spinning disk correct? So wouldn't it ruin an ipod if you ride with it embraces heavy impacts from falls? I would think a flash memory type device would be better....like the liquid force thing that is out...has anyone used it or heard

any info greatly appreciated

Depends, some iPods such as the Nano and Shuffle are flashed based so they would not really have a problem with impact. Another thing to consider is that an iPod's HDD is not always spinning it only spins when it needs to. So say you have a playlist of 3 hours, every 25-45 minutes (depending on generation of iPod.) the iPod's HDD will spool up for about 30 seconds to write the requested files (songs.) onto the memory. (buffer)

Theoretically flash memory is better for high impact things, but HDD's are really not venerable unless they are spinning. So if you fall when the iPod is buffering and take a really really hard impact on something, then yes, there is a possibility of damaging the HDD. I'm not really sure that water at 22-25 mph would really be all that hard on the device, as your body would probably be taking most of the impact. IE dissipating the energy.

revolutionconcepts, I sell Ipods and DRAGON88 put it perfectly. BUT if you are looking at using it for skateboarding as well as other board sports where there might be impact, like DRAGON88 said the Nano is a flash player so its super durable... physically. A 30GB or 60GB deffinatly has a risk of damage, but even then, its pretty durable. I know I have a 30GB and I have dropped it while I was skateboarding and shizzle. shes fine for now, but like I said the "risk" is a little higher.

if you ask me i think it's ridiculous to wear an expensive ipod while on the water. flash would be idea if you HAVE to have it.

"but HDD's are really not venerable unless they are spinning."

umm..don't know if you've ever opened a harddrive but everything is VERY close together. if the readers/heads touch the plates it could damage it. spinning or no spinning you're really gambling your money by taking a harddrive on the water.

urinal mint, thats what I was saying... Your best bet is to go with a flash player... aka Ipod Nano... and thats only like 179$ canadian for a 1GB... You deffinatly would not use 240 songs in one sesh so that would be plently of capacity...

Nekkie, did you get your nano housing off of H2O Audio's online store? They are out of stock now, and I want to listen to Milosh on my next session! Evil or Very Mad

Urnial Mint, yes, actually I have. I've also read stories of people taking out HDD's and throwing them down stairs, kicking them etc. Then when they plugged them in they still worked fine.

Although the tolerances are really tight in a HDD they are still pretty durable. If you're going to be literally abusing a storage medium then yes compact flash memory is the way to go.

Especially given the nature of most waterproof cases I would not be very concerned with hurting the HDD. The case would probably take the grunt of the impact anyways, and it would take one hell of an impact to damage a non spinning HDD, especially considering most modern drives actually "stop" the disk when it's not in use...

if you ask me, i'd rather play with a paper shredder and 3 $100 bills, at least it would be more amusing.

if youre just gonna be using the music while you ride, you'd be better off getting the LF player. it comes with waterproof earphones which sound half decent and also a strap to keep it on your arm. its not a necessity, but its kinda cool. if you get an ipod i would get a flash unit because there's no moving parts. i know of people whose 20g ipods have been damaged from just running. and then after buying the ipod, you'd have to get a waterproof case for it. that'll setup will run you significantly more money than the LF player, but you can store more songs on it and you'd be "cool" walking around with your white headphones. sweet ass.

I have the 256mb Oregon Scientific and it works great. Ear buds fall out on hard falls, but stay in for everything else...
