Go skate cause you love it not cause you want to be in a f#$ing mountain dew comercial with dave mirra |
So you are telling me you would not ride a winch best trick tour with a decent amount of prize money involved, if it was setup right and represented the sport in a good way?
You would rather ride the Pro Tour, with its wakeboarding style format? The Pro tour is not horrible but the format needs to be changed to help wakeskating progress.
IMO the pro tour is holding wakeskating from its full potential.
I want to see more contests where people have to throw out the best shlt they have to win, not just a few stock tricks because they have to worry about falling and then their day being over.
agree or disagree... i think that the idea could be good, if done the right way.
Dave Mirra is actually a pretty nice guy... but the only commercial you would ever see me in would be one where i was pissing on the tire of his bike.
Dont question the reason i skate...

SleuCrew, i agree with you on everything except one thing. most people see wakeboarding and are like OMG!Thats awesome, take me!!!!!! then i say yah but i wakeskate 90 percent of the time and theyre like...ohh. but yah ur right about the chicks and panties
the pro tour is pretty sweet but yah alot of those guys wont go for any of the insane stuff that theyre barely landing. theres a few that wont do much, but most of those guys give it there all. I wish they still had the vans triple crown, i live 2 hours from the old indianapolis stop

great posts, sleu. Especially that last one. In the end, somebody is always going to want to make money off of something that's cool and marketable. Quite frankly, after only ten years, it's a huge compliment to wakeskating and what all of the forefathers helped build.
Realistically, can you have 20 "core" toejams? (Im sorry, I hate the word "core" but it's pretty much the only word people understand) No, shizzle doesn't work like that. In the end, you have to take the good with the bad...no matter how "core" you want wakeskating to be, it needs to grow to survive and to be accepted. With that comes some serious riders, and some fair weather friends. If you look through our member list, you'll see that we've had some fairweather friends ourselves.
In the end, the most important part is that wakeskating is represented properly, which will encourage some of the art's leaders to come and ride and help progress wakeskating. If it's retarded and makes a mockery of wakeskating, then it does absolutely no good for us. And to top it off, it's a way for a few of the riders to make cash in an industry where money is so abundant and there for anyone who wants to grab a fist full of it (sarcasm, sarcasm, sarcasm on the last part).
as for wakeboarding, people may be impressed with a huge raley or a giant flip at first, but it becomes old because a lot of it looks the same. the same thing goes for the waterdancing on the pro tour. In the end, I think most would conceed that that's just another way for some of the riders to get some money and some exposure. I think wakeskating will grow out of that format quickly, if it hasn't already. Again, the pendulum seems to be swinging back towards the wake to wake direction, which is totally cool. If both activities have the winch/pool gap format, I think it will be fine. Seriously, even for a wakeboarder, that oakley pool gap at boardstock (or wherever that was) was effing gnarly, and it was no worse than an artificial set up that might be used at a snowboarding event.
Finally, let me just say that i used to get so pissy when people would say that pro tour wakeskating was boring to watch. I was like, OMG!!! It's harder than wakeboarding and more accessible blah, blah blah...me likey. but point blank, if it's boring to the public, nobody is going to want to invest any money in it for contests and what have you.
Sleu, I guess that dave mirra commercial is pretty bad, huh? It's pretty unbelievable...I guess he was unsatisfied with a "semi-luxurious lifestyle".

SleuCrew, DUDE i wasn't questioning why you ride. Second, your hole argumen is based on one of your last senteces where you said: "i think the idea could be good, if done the right way"
So do you want to take the chance that Mountain Dew is going to do it the right way?????
Of course it would be cool to see a comp like that, A tour??? maybe not so cool, You have to remember that not everyone has acces to a winch and people arent going to want to watch winch skating all the time cause they cant relate to it. Get what im saying
My hat is off to guys like colin, byerly, bliss sports and silas for doing there own thing and taking it into there own hands. I pray that others will learn from them and do there own thing for the love of the sport.

Eric Koston talks about the dew tour in an interview:
Koston: Yeah, that’s why they’re doing it, they don’t have a park event anymore which I’m glad. Appleyard, almost the same guys, but couple different ones here and there. More of the same, but it took X-Games like ten years to figure that out but, they did, at least they’re trying, but I went to Louisville to do that Mountain Dew thing, and it was a fiznackling joke.
I went to that Louisville one, it sucked. I’m like, I’m not going back, I’m not going to waste my time. When I saw the televised version, I watched it and the commentating was fiznackling awful. There were like 200 kids, it’s where the Louisville Cardinals play basketball, so it’s like you know, probably 17 thousand they could fit in there. But with only about 200 kids in the stands, it just looks pathetic, I don’t want to be a part of that shizzle, I don’t want to support it, I don’t want to validate it by showing up, and that’s just a bad, really bad course, I was like, like we went back in time, it left a bad fiznackling taste in my mouth and I was like, I’m not coming back to one of these, I don’t care what you guys do, leave me out, don’t email me, don’t call me.
AND, that's for SKATEBOARDING. You think they would put a better effort into wakeskating? I am doubtful.

PIRATE, My whole point from the first post has been the fact that if it was done properly it could be cool, yeah its a total gamble and could totally suck ass, but if it sucks then people and the riders wont support it and it will be a total flop. But i still think that if done the right way with the right people the possibility is there.
And i completely understand where you are coming from about the winch, but its showing accessibility and opens the doors for those who know nothing about wakeskating to get a glimpse of what its all about. Think about how many people have access to a ski or boat of some sort...
I guess the way i look at it is from my snowboarding background, The Dew tour had a snowboard rail jam here in portland, im not sure if they were doing this at every stop or not... It was decent and a good time, and it packed about 600 people in a little outdoor area. A better example is the Redbull Heavy Metal Tour... A super fun urban snowboarding contest, yes snowboarding is much more popular... but there is no mountain just truck loads of snow and rails in the middle of a downtown environment. So i will say i think the possibility is there for wakeskating... "maybe"
Greg T, Where did that interview come from? I would be curious to read the whole thing because part of it really makes no sense. Because the Dew tour has a street course, i throughly enjoyed watching P-Rod kill it and the course was "decent" i thought. Maybe i read something wrong or missed something in there...
I have been going to the X games, winter and summer for quite a few years and people have learned from it, When the X games first started it totally sucked! the wrong people were involved and things were just not setup the way they should of been. over the years they have gotten better and have learned to put the contests in the hands of people in each specific industry and not so much in the hands of a general contractor and some guy with no experience in that portion of the action sports industry.
Im not going to argue the point anymore it "could, possibly" be cool.
Here are some pics from the heavy metal tour... because it is so kick ass

i do agree that the dew tour isnt the greatest but like slue said, either was the x games at first. i think if they want to they have th ability to make a sick tour and i know it will be good for the sport.
like of course ull have pro's saying they dont want to sell out or wat not and that is cool but then ull have the pro's getting the sport out there and making it possible for the core riders to still have a sport. if every rider were core and stayed under ground... u wouldnt have people able to only ride with out a second job. things like the dew tour and x games in reality make money for the companies in the industry thus letting company's have riders not compete in ever comp and still make money. im haveing a hard time explaining it but u all getting me?
also if they do have wakeskating in the tour and get the right people like byerly or Blast productions to make the comp right for wakeskating then why would it suck????

| thats another thing koston talked about. They came to him and asked what to do. He told them to look at the x games with the more true street course and jam style format. They didnt listen.

| Quick clarification. Bliss Sports( ? ) and Blast! Productions ( Blast!, The Blacktop Brodeo ) are two completely different entities. Blast! Productions (Jimmie Walker) is responsible for the first Blast! Contest (which Bliss did help with) back in March and for the Brodeo. Bliss Sports is a sponsor and NOT a partner in those events. sponsor NOT a partner.
